Permanent Collection
Our permanent collection is an eclectic mix of paintings, prints, sculpture and photographs representing the work of 20th and 21st century artists. The collection is an acknowledgement of the diversity of our Canadian culture, celebrating the rich and varied heritage of Canadian artists.
The GCAC’s permanent collection includes works by notable artists such as Albert Chiarandini, a contemporary of the Group of Seven, Bruce Smith, Helen Lucas, Travis Shilling, York Wilson, and photographer Tom Zsolt.
While we maintain and preserve the art of the past, we continue to build our collection with the inclusion of new works by emerging artists who will help shape our vision of Canadian Art in the future.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION
What Is a Permanent Collection?
A permanent collection is a group of artworks held in trust for the public. These works are not temporary loans. They are preserved, studied and shared over time so that future generations can experience and learn from them.
A permanent collection expresses the identity and priorities of an institution. It grows gradually, guided by curatorial priorities, artistic merit, historical significance and community relevance.
A permanent collection is the core group of artworks a gallery or museum owns on behalf of the public. These works:
- are not for sale
- are preserved, conserved and researched
- help tell the story of a place and its people
- are shared through exhibitions, publications and education
A permanent collection expresses the identity of an institution. It is the foundation on which exhibitions, interpretation and learning are built.
